ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - STAYING WHEN YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT

WHAT AN UNCOMMON STORY OF ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

One of the worst things you can do is stay in a place THE LORD has JUDGED and told you to LEAVE. IN FACT YOU NEVER SHOULD'VE BEEN THERE. Let's take a look:

In the original Hebrew text of Genesis 19:16, the word used for Lot’s hesitation is wayyitmahmāh (וַיִּתְמַהְמָהּ). It translates to lingering, delaying, or tarrying.

This single moment of foot-dragging captures a profound internal conflict:

  • Sodom was inside him: Even after a terrifying night where a mob surrounded his house and the angels had to blind them, Lot still couldn't just get up and run. As the old saying goes, "It took one night to get Israel out of Egypt, but 40 years to get Egypt out of Israel." For Lot, Sodom had wormed its way into his heart.
  • The weight of what he was leaving: Lot wasn't just a visitor; he "sat in the gateway" of the city, meaning he had achieved high social status, wealth, and civic leadership. His hesitation was the grief and paralysis of walking away from everything he had built, even when he knew it was toxic and doomed.
  • A portrait of forced grace: Because Lot froze, the text notes that the angels seized his hand, his wife's hand, and his daughters' hands to drag them away. It stands as one of the most vivid pictures of mercy in the Bible—God physically pulling a paralyzed, reluctant person out of harm's way solely due to His compassion and Abraham's prayers.

SELF REFLECTION: What relationship, partnership, business venture, business association are you hesitating, having hard times, never should've been in that place...that you are wrestling with the weight of leaving. What has you froze? What has captured your emotional intelligence? What keeps you in 'assigned difficulty' that was NOT ASSIGNED BY THE LORD?

How many times does The LORD have to seize your hand via, drama, trauma, pressure, and using uncommon voices?

THE TRAGEDY OF HESITATION

The tragedy of "the hesitation" is that it was contagious. While Lot was physically dragged to safety, his wife couldn't mentally let go; her choice to stop and look back was the final, fatal extension of that same hesitation.

  • The Warning: In Genesis 19, two angels visit Lot in the wicked city of Sodom and warn him that God is about to destroy it. They tell him to gather his family and flee immediately.
  • The Hesitation: Instead of leaving right away, Lot lingered (or hesitated). Having grown comfortable, wealthy, and socially integrated (sitting as a leader at the city gate), he delayed.
  • The Forcible Extraction: Lot dragged his feet so much that the angels had to physically grab the hands of Lot, his wife, and his daughters and pull them out of the city limits by mercy and force.
  • The Outcome: Lot escaped, but his lingering and emotional attachment to Sodom cost him dearly: his sons-in-law refused to leave and died in the fire, his wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, and he lost everything he owned.
