To tell the difference between God’s Spirit (the Holy Spirit) and a familiar or deceptive spirit, the Bible provides a clear set of spiritual diagnostic tools. 1 John 4:1 commands believers to "try [test] the spirits whether they are of God."
Here is how you can tell the difference based on Scripture, focusing on their message, their sound, and the fruit they produce.
1. The Christ Test (The Message)
The absolute primary test of any spirit is what it says about Jesus Christ.
- God's Spirit: Always exalts, glorifies, and confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord and has come in the flesh (1 John 4:2-3). The Holy Spirit will always point you to the cross and the authority of Jesus.
- A Familiar Spirit: Will either deny Jesus, minimize Him, or redirect your attention away from Him toward secrets, ancestors, legalism, or self-worship.
2. The Sound Test (The Tone)
As seen in the Hebrew mechanics, deceptive spirits carry a distinct "frequency" compared to God.
- God's Spirit: Speaks with clarity, order, and authority. He is a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12) that brings profound peace and conviction, never confusion. God's Spirit speaks through the established word of Scripture.
- A Familiar Spirit: Often operates in muttering, peeping, or whispering secrets (Isaiah 8:19). It thrives on hidden details ("I know a secret about your family line") and creates a chaotic, heavy, or eerie atmosphere.
3. The Fruit Test (The Outcome)
You can tell the source of a spiritual impression by what it produces in your mind and heart over time (Matthew 7:16).
- God's Spirit: Produces love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (self-control) (Galatians 5:22-23). God’s Spirit leaves you clear-minded and closer to God.
- A Familiar Spirit: Produces fear, bondage, paranoia, obsession, or addiction. Familiar spirits seek control or possession, overriding your personal self-control, whereas the Holy Spirit honors your freewill.
4. The Source of Truth (The Standard)
- God's Spirit: Will never contradict the Bible. Jesus called Him the "Spirit of truth" (John 16:13). If an impression, dream, or voice tells you to do something against God's Word, it is not from God.
- A Familiar Spirit: Uses partial truths, flattery, or predictions to gain your trust, but its ultimate destination is spiritual deception.
SIDENOTE: I HAVE BEEN TO CHURCHES WHERE PEOPLE FELL OUT...BUT IT WAS NOT GOD'S SPIRIT! It was a prevailing spirit of that house....(most churches house a spirit...but the question is...is it GOD's spirit? Also, what was done in that house CANNOT BE DUPLICATED by its leadership anywhere else. This is why imitation NEEDS TO STUDY AUTHENTIC...or else it won't know how to deceive.
THE TWO MAIN TRICKS: Chirping, muttering, chaotic impressions. As well as Twists, adds to, or contradicts the Bible.
PRAYER FOR DISCERNMENT
"Heavenly Father, I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. I thank You for Your love, Your protection, and the gift of Your Holy Spirit.
Lord, I ask right now for the spirit of wisdom and revelation. Grant me sharp spiritual discernment to see things as they truly are. Open my eyes to recognize any voice, impression, dream, or influence that does not come from You. If there is any deceptive or familiar spirit trying to whisper to me, mutter confusion, or bring heavy atmospheres into my life, expose it by the light of Your truth.
Father, Your Word says that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Right now, by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, I choose to close every door I may have opened—knowingly or unknowingly—to any familiar or deceptive spirit. I repent for any time I looked to worldly sources, family patterns, or fear instead of looking to You.
I declare a total release from every spiritual weight, generational cycle, and demonic whisper. I command every spirit of fear, confusion, obsession, and paranoia to leave me right now, because my body is a temple of the Holy Ghost.
Holy Spirit, I invite You to fill every empty space in my mind and heart. Fill me with Your love, Your power, and a sound mind. Teach me Your still, small voice and anchor my soul in the truth of Your Holy Scriptures. I seal myself in Your peace today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen."
