Religious institutions and leaders who are not sent by God will more than likely distort scripture by taking verses out of context, adding human traditions, or ignoring complete biblical themes to fit institutional, cultural, or financial agendas.

Common Ways Scripture is Distorted

Proof-Texting (Out of Context): Isolating a single verse from its historical, cultural, and grammatical setting to make it mean whatever the speaker desires, ignoring the surrounding verses that might state the exact opposite.

Exaggerating or Fabricating Promises: Claiming "God told me" or misusing passages to promise guaranteed wealth, health, or an end to suffering without scriptural backing, which the Bible likens to false prophecy (Jeremiah 14:14).

Omitting Difficult Truths: Focusing entirely on one attribute of God—such as unconditional love—while completely ignoring holiness, justice, and the call to repentance, which paints an incomplete and misleading picture of God's character.

Elevating Tradition Over Truth: Placing human rules, organizational bylaws, or cultural preferences on the same level as the written word, which Jesus condemned as teaching "the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:9).

Persecution and the Faith Community

The New Testament frequently addresses the topic of persecution, typically framing it as opposition from external secular or religious authorities rather than a standard practice among believers.

• • Internal Conflict: Scripture acknowledges that conflict, false teachings, and division can occur within the church (Acts 20:29-30, Galatians 2:4). Leaders and believers are admonished to address these issues through restoration, discipline, and adherence to truth rather than persecution.
  • External Opposition: Passages such as 2 Timothy 3:12 ("all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution") generally refer to the pressure and hostility faced by Christians from a world aligned against their beliefs.
  • The Standard of Love: Jesus established mutual love as the defining characteristic of his followers, stating, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35).
