YOU ARE COVERED BY GOD WHEN HE GIVES YOU AN ASSIGNMENT
Jesus Christ is the ultimate Shepherd and all believers share in ministry.
Key Biblical Passages on Pastors and Leadership
- Psalm 23:1 – "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." This verse points to God as the primary shepherd and provider for every believer.
- Ephesians 4:11–12 – Christ gives leaders, including pastors and teachers, "to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."
- Hebrews 13:17 – Encourages believers to submit to and honor their leaders "because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account."
- 1 Peter 5:2–3 – Instructs church leaders to "be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them" not out of greed, but with eagerness.
- 1 Timothy 3:1–7 & Titus 1:5–9 – Outlines the moral, character, and teaching qualifications required for someone to serve as an overseer or pastor.
The Priesthood of All Believers
While New Testament writers describe local elders and shepherds guiding a flock, they also emphasize that individual Christians are called to minister, encourage, and hold each other accountable:
- Romans 15:14 – Christians are fully capable of instructing and admonishing one another.
- Hebrews 10:24–25 – Believers are urged to provoke one another to love and good deeds and not neglect meeting together.
THERE WILL BE SEASONS YOU WALK WITH CHRIST AS YOUR SHEPHARD
The Bible directly addresses seasons of spiritual transition, isolation, or being without a human leader.
When a believer is in a season without a human pastor, scripture highlights a few key principles regarding how God cares for His people:
1. The "Wilderness" Season (Direct Guidance from God)
Throughout the Bible, a "wilderness" represents a season of isolation where human structures, leaders, or comforts are removed so that an individual can rely completely on God.
- Galatians 1:15–18 – After his dramatic conversion, the Apostle Paul did not immediately join a church or study under human pastors. Instead, he went away into a season in Arabia for three years, being taught directly by revelation from Jesus Christ.
- Exodus 13:21 – When the Israelites left Egypt, they did not have an established system of local pastors. Instead, the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night to guide them directly on their journey.
2. Jesus Has Deep Compassion for the Leaderless
The Bible describes being without a spiritual leader as a state of being "scattered" or "harassed," but notes that this state instantly triggers the protective care of Jesus.
- Matthew 9:36 – "When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." When you lack human leadership, Jesus does not look at you with judgment; He looks at you with deep compassion and steps in to be your caregiver.
3. God Becomes Your Personal Shepherd
When human leaders fail, leave, or are absent, God explicitly promises to assume the role of the direct overseer of your soul.
- Ezekiel 34:11–12 – "For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep."
- 1 Peter 2:25 – "For ‘you were like sheep going astray,’ but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls."
4. The Transition Season (Testing and Unity)
If you are without a pastor because a local church is undergoing a pastoral transition, scripture reminds the flock to remain unified and steadfast rather than scattering.
- Matthew 26:31 – Quote from Zechariah: "I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered." During a pastoral void, the biblical call is to resist the temptation to wander off, leaning instead into the community of other believers.
GOD IS GOD AND GOD ALONE!!
DO NOT BE TRICKED OUT OF YOUR SEASON. HUMANS CAN ONLY GO SO FAR. GOD USES HIMSELF AS YOUR COVERING FOR CERTAIN SEASONS TO PROVE TO YOU AND THOSE ASSIGNED...HE IS GOD AND GOD ALONE. When God removes you from human leadership it is ALWAYS DIVINE.
